Parenting and Caregiver Tests

Parenting assessments carry a risk that other assessments do not: they can be read as a verdict on whether you are a good parent. None of these are that. They are structured ways to look at what is currently happening in your family and at what it is costing you, and they are written on the assumption that you are already trying hard in circumstances that are rarely as supportive as they should be.

Three assessments sit in this section. One looks at your parenting approach — consistency, warmth, limits, and how you respond when your child is at their most difficult. One looks at your own load as a caregiver, which is the part most parents skip. One is completed about a child, and looks at attention, activity and organisation in everyday settings.

The order matters. Parents who are depleted often read ordinary parenting difficulty as personal failure, and that reading is much harder to correct while the depletion continues. If you are stretched thin, the caregiver strain assessment is usually the most honest place to start.

How these assessments differ from each other

The parenting test asks about you as a parent: your responses, your consistency, and the gap between how you intend to parent and how it goes on a hard evening. It is completed about yourself, not about your child.

The caregiver strain and emotional load test asks about the weight of the role, including the invisible parts — planning, anticipating, managing everyone's emotions, and the absence of time that belongs to you. It applies to parents of young children, parents of children with additional needs, and adults caring for ageing family members.

The child ADHD and attention test is the only assessment here completed about someone else. It asks a parent about a child's attention, activity and organisation across settings. It is not a test of your parenting and it does not diagnose your child.

When the concern is your child rather than you

A single assessment completed by one parent is a starting point, not an evaluation of a child. Children behave differently across home, school and social settings, and a full picture requires more than one perspective. If you are worried, the most useful next step is usually a conversation with your child's teacher alongside a professional consultation.

If your concern is about a teenager's emotional state rather than attention or behaviour, please read the guidance in the teen section carefully first. Adult assessments should not be given to a teenager to complete.

What these assessments cannot do

None of these assessments diagnoses anything. They do not confirm or rule out a condition, they are not a clinical interview, and a score is not a label. What they can do is give language to something that has been hard to describe, and show whether a pattern is intense enough, or persistent enough, to be worth a professional conversation.

They cannot assess a child's development, learning needs or safety, and they cannot account for what is happening in your child's wider environment. Where there is a safeguarding concern, or where a child is in danger, contact the appropriate services immediately rather than using a self-assessment.
